    A Mother’s Day Salute

Photo-126-1I haven’t posted in a while…but it is Mother’s Day and what better time to first take an honorable bow to all of the women who have helped me out patiently and personally since I have entered this truly sacred role as a Mum: to my own Mom, my mother-in-law, my sister, N’s caregivers and a very supportive PA!  Having chosen the role of a Mother, we are given the most important job in the world. We are growing, raising, and creating the future generation for our planet. Every mother makes a difference in each day that she wakes (or doesn’t sleep!) with each conscious moment she provides to her child or children.

This year I would also like to recognize 10 Moms who are making a real difference in the world. Some you will recognize and others perhaps not. There are, of course, countless Moms making impact in their communities and beyond.

Give an incredible Mom – whether your own or another – a shout out in the comments below.

Shantie Morgan-Palmer – Shantie is a mother of seven and the owner and operator of Evelyn’s Closet, a non-profit organization that provides clothing to women in need. Shantie created Evelyn’s Closet while living in a homeless shelter with her children after losing her job. While experiencing the struggle of living in poverty as a mother, Shantie made it her mission to help other women and mothers in similar situations.

Reese Witherspoon – Reese is a mother of three and is an American actress and producer. Reese is actively involved in children’s and women’s advocacy organizations including Save the Children, Children’s Defense Fund, and the Avon Foundation. Reese once said “As a woman and a mother I care deeply about the well being of other women and children throughout the world and through the years, I have always looked for opportunities to make a difference”.

Hazar Mahayni – Hazar is a mother of three and a pharmacist, she is also the principal of a school for Syrian refugees in Turkey. Hazar works remotely from her home in Montreal using security cameras as a way to overlook and take charge the Syrian school. After planning a 5 day trip to Turkey, Hazar visited the Al Salam school for refugees and saw that it was in desperate need of change. Hazar ended up staying to help out for 3 years, changing the rules to allow girls to play sports, and creating remedial classes for overage students that had dropped out due to war.

Mariska Hargitay – Mariksa is a mother of three, American actress, producer, and director. She is the founder and president of the Joyful Hearth Foundation, an organization established to support survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence, and child abuse. As of 2010, the Joyful Heart Foundation has raised $20 million and sent over 5,000 women and children on therapeutic programs.
Mariza Mejia is a mother of four who lives in a rural Trojes community in Honduras. After losing her son to intestinal worms due to unsafe drinking water, Mariza took it upon her as her personal mission to provide safe drinking water to everyone in her community. Working the the PWW organization, Mariza became a Community Agent and successfully installed filters for the homes in her community. She continues to maintain the filters and provides safe drinking water to the entire town.

Cristal Logothetis – mother of one and is the founder of the nonprofit organization Carry the Future. Cristal created Carry the Future after visiting a refugee camp in Athens and seeing how simple items, like a baby carrier, could make a huge difference in the lives of local refugees. Since founding Carry the Future, Cristal has delivered over 3000 baby carriers, all with handwritten messages of hope attached to them, to refugees in Greece. Making a difference, one baby carrier at a time!

Angelina Jolie Pitt – Angelina is a mother of six and an American actress, filmmaker, and humanitarian. Angelina served as a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador for 10 years and has since been promoted to the rank of Special Envoy to High Commissioner Antonio Guterres, participating in over a dozen field missions around the world to meet refugees and advocate on their behalf. Angelina has also founded several foundations in the effort to support conservation and community development, child immigration and education, human rights and women’s rights.

Marilyn Washington Harris  – Marilyn is a childless mother after her only son was shot and killed in 2000. Since her son’s death, Marilyn has founded the non-profit organization Khadafy Washington Foundation for Non-Violence in the effort to give support and guidance to grieving parents who have lost their children. Marilyn is also involved in the nonprofit group, My Baby Matters 2, which strives to provide easier access to exercise, education programs, and community involvement. Marilyn was awarded Oakland’s 2015 Mother of the Year award for her help and generosity to many struggling families.

Rosie O’Donnell – Rosie is a mother of five and and American comedian, actress, author, and television personality. Rosie founded the For All Kids Foundation to help institute national standards for daycare across the country. Since 1997, Rosie has awarded more than $22 million in Early Childhood Care and Education program grants to over 900 nonprofit organizations. Among other things, Rosie also created Rosie’s Broadway Kids, dedicated to providing free instruction in music and dance to New York City public schools and students.

Sonya Christilaw – Sonya is a mother of one and is the founder of Nana’s Foundation, which provides free supplies, clothes and other necessities to those in need. Sonya was once a single mother on welfare, depending on charities and the government to help provide necessities to her family. She felt undignified in the requirement of constantly providing ID and tax forms each time she needed assistance in feeding and clothing her children. Today, Sonya has created a place where people can come to receive the essentials that they need without being harassed for any paperwork. Sonya stated, “They shouldn’t have to tell me their story to get help”.

Jessica Seinfeld – Jessica is a mother of three, author of two family cookbooks (Deceptively Delicious, Simple Secrets to Get Your Kids Eating Good Food and Double Delicious! Good, Simple Food for Busy, Complicated Lives), and the founder of Baby Buggy. Baby Buggy was created as a way to provide gently used essentials to families in need, as a way to alleviate the stress of living in poverty. As of May 2013, Baby Buggy has donated over six million items to New York families in need!

Thanks to these mothers, and all of the mothers who strive to make a difference in the lives of their children and in the world. Today is a day to celebrate all of the strong women who call themselves mothers, those at the centre and the heart of every family.

    Happy Mother’s Day!
