Video: How to Massage Your Baby

Roxy’s Baby Massage Tips and Video!

My baby loves his daily massage which I sometimes  practice when he’s on his changing table in the morning though typically I give him massage an hour after feeding and prior to settling him down for sleep at night. Below is a video of an easy-to-learn version of baby massage. Babies can be massaged at any age — remember to yourself take deep breaths in preparation for massaging your baby, and throughout the massage. You will find yourself and baby both smiling throughout! You are intuitive as a parent, so massage baby as long as he/she seems to be enjoying the experience and try these strokes until you are feeling comfortable, before expanding your massage repertoire of techniques.  Dad will learn to love massaging baby too!

Some of the benefits for you and your baby:

    • Relieves the symptoms of trapped wind, colic, constipation, improving weight gain and easing teething pain among other things.
    • Baby massage is a wonderful way to spend one-to-one time with your baby: by massaging your baby you are increasing his/her physical contact which helps to make them feel loved, and reassured. You will start to notice that baby responds positively to your touch which will make you feel more reassured and confident. This will help develop the bond between you.
    • It has been proven that baby massage can help to reduce the signs and symptoms of Postnatal Depression.
    • Help with relaxation for both you and baby and aids restful sleep.
    • Dads often feel they miss out on a lot of the hands-on care of their babies, especially if they are at work and their baby is breastfed by massaging baby daily dad not only gets a little special one to one time but mum also gets a well-earned rest.
    • Stimulates and supports your baby’s physical, emotional and social development

    What is baby massage?

Baby Massage originated in India but is now practiced around the world. The International Association of Infant Massage (IAIM) approach believes that “every baby deserves respect, tenderness and warmth”. The IAIM approach incorporates strokes from India and Sweden, and uses principles from yoga and reflexology.

Touch plays an important role in communicating with babies. Massaging your baby is a wonderful way to express your love for your child, as well as meeting their needs for affection, attention and relaxation. This gentle and loving experience can help to improve healthy development and well-being for your baby.

“It is through loving, caressing, tactile stimulation and communication that the infant learns that he/she is loved. We must speak to their skins. We must speak to their backs, which thirst and cry as much as their bellies”. – Loving Hands: the Traditional Art of Baby Massage” by Frederick Leboyer
