Why Matcha Green Tea Is Better Than Coffee

I have always been a sucker for yummy hot lattes, frothy coffees and milky chai teas at tucked-away cafes, especially in urban areas.  I have been known to snuggle up with a java in the corner of the local bookshop cafe on more than one occasion!

Have you tried matcha green tea?!

I became obsessed with matcha while living in Hong Kong in 1997, the year of ‘handover’ from British back to Chinese rule. I stumbled upon this delicious green sensation (with countless benefits!) upon entering a Japanese tea shop in search of a new tea set. That very tea shop became my nook of comfort as a frequented it throughout the three years I lived in HK.  I can only describe matcha’s flavour as a lightly roasted, smoking smooth, milky green tea.

    Why Matcha Tea?

Not only is one cup of matcha is equivalent to ten cups of brewed green tea in terms of nutritional value, below are SIX more amazing benefits:

    1. Cancer – Fighter
137x More Cancer-Fighting EGCg than brewed green tea. Click here for a list of studies that prove its worth.
    2. Anti Aging
Matcha green tea is rapidly gaining more popularity throughout the world because of its ability to combat inflammation, oxidation and aging.
    3. Energy Booster
Matcha source green tea is an ideal substitute for coffee because it provides an energy boost without the crash.
    4. Improve Mind & Focus
Zowie! Do I need this one: matcha is rich in L-Theanine, a rare amino acid that actually promotes a state of relaxation and well-being by acting upon the brains functioning.
    5. Calorie Burner
Ahem, okay this benefit suits me fine too: studies suggest matcha green tea can enhance both resting metabolic rate and fat burning.
    6. Detoxifier
As it’s grown in the shade, matcha is substantially richer in chlorophyll (a powerful detoxifier) than other green teas.

Need I say more, mamas?  Best thing about drinking my daily milky matcha blend in the morning is that I don’t have the jitters that coffee gives me when I need to be alert and refreshed for baby.

The equipment required for the making of matcha may include:

Tea bowl (茶碗, chawan) – large enough to whisk the fine powder tea around 120 millilitres (4.06 fl oz)
Tea whisk (茶筅, chasen) – a bamboo whisk with fine bristles to whisk or whip the tea foam
Tea spoon (茶杓, chashaku) – (also called tea scoop) a bamboo spoon to measure the powder tea into the tea bowl. Not the same as a Western teaspoon.
Tea caddy (棗, natsume) – container for the matcha powder tea
Tea cloth (茶巾, chakin) – small cotton cloth for cleaning tea ware during the tea ceremony
